Ent vs Microsoft Purview for insider risk when AI agents act for employees
Ent’s intent-aware endpoint agent that intervenes in risky human and agent actions, beside Purview Insider Risk Management and Endpoint DLP inside Microsoft 365 licensing.
A file policy that raises an alert after the copy finished has already lost the file. Ent’s founders built their June 2026 launch on that timing problem, arguing that attacks which once took days now land in seconds. It is the useful lens for comparing Ent with Microsoft Purview.
It is easy to file Ent as another DLP agent. Its launch material describes something closer to a behavioral layer: a lightweight agent on Windows, macOS, Linux, and browsers that reads activity across apps, browsers, data movement, and local runtimes, judges the intent behind an action by a person or an AI agent, and applies just-in-time interventions. Purview splits the same territory into Insider Risk Management, which scores risky activity from Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Graph logs, and Endpoint DLP, which enforces data rules on devices. Ent’s capabilities come from launch material and are stated, not independently demonstrated.
Buy Ent when the risk you need to stop lives in browser, app, and AI-agent actions across platforms, and intervention has to happen before the action completes. Buy Microsoft Purview when the organization already licenses Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 and wants insider risk cases, DLP, and eDiscovery in one compliance stack.
Overview
| Primary use case | Workspace security: insider risk, AI usage governance, data loss prevention, and last-mile threat prevention from one endpoint agent | Data security and compliance: Insider Risk Management, Communication Compliance, DLP, information protection, and eDiscovery for Microsoft 365 data |
|---|---|---|
| Day-to-day workflow | Set customer-defined policy, let the agent evaluate intent at the moment of use, and review interventions and incidents with behavioral context | Configure insider risk policies from templates, triage alerts into cases, and escalate to eDiscovery (Premium) when an investigation needs it |
| Main buying consideration | No public pricing. Hosted in the customer’s cloud or as an Ent-hosted service, sold by demo and quote | Microsoft Purview Suite USD 12 per user per month paid yearly, requiring Microsoft 365 E3. Included in Microsoft 365 E5 at USD 60 per user per month paid yearly |
We reviewed Ent’s homepage, plus Microsoft’s Purview Suite and Purview pricing pages, the Purview licensing guidance, and the Insider Risk Management overview on Microsoft Learn, on 14 Oct 2026. We did not run either product.

Editions and pricing
Purview’s price is a per-user license that depends on the Microsoft 365 plan you already own. Ent publishes no price and offers a choice of hosting.
| How it is sold | One platform, self-hosted in the customer’s cloud or hosted by Ent | Microsoft 365 E5, the Purview Suite add-on for E3, or smaller add-ons such as Microsoft 365 E5 Insider Risk Management |
|---|---|---|
| Prerequisite | None stated | Microsoft 365 E3, or Office 365 E3 plus Enterprise Mobility + Security E3, for the add-ons |
| Deployment targets | Windows, macOS, Linux, and browser extension | Microsoft 365 services, onboarded Windows and macOS devices, and connectors for third-party indicators |
What each product watches
Both read user activity to find risk. They read it at different layers.
| Signal source | Behavior across applications, browsers, workflows, data movement, and local runtimes, read by an on-device agent | Logs from Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Graph, device indicators from onboarded endpoints, and third-party indicators through data connectors |
|---|---|---|
| AI agents | Evaluates human and AI-agent intent as separate actors and governs AI usage | Protection for Microsoft 365 Copilot data is listed in the Purview plan. Coverage of third-party agents beyond that is not confirmed in public documentation |
| Privacy model | Hosted in the customer’s cloud for data sovereignty | Privacy-by-design architecture that balances user privacy against organizational risk |
Intervention and investigation
Both can act on risk. The question is when.
| Timing | Just-in-time interventions before the action completes, per Ent’s launch material | Insider risk alerts and cases after activity is scored. Endpoint DLP can block configured actions on devices |
|---|---|---|
| Investigation | Incidents investigated with behavioral context covering what happened, why, and what should happen next | Case management, reviewer notifications, and escalation to eDiscovery (Premium) |
| Ecosystem | Integrations are on the stated roadmap. A list is not confirmed in public documentation | Integrated workflow across Purview solutions, Defender, and Microsoft 365 |
Choose Ent when Linux endpoints, browser and local AI runtimes, or self-hosted data sovereignty are requirements, and when an intervention has to land before the action completes. Choose Microsoft Purview when the data that matters already lives in Microsoft 365 and insider risk cases should flow into DLP and eDiscovery under licenses you may already hold.
